Editorial No. 02 — Craft Comparison
Two undisputed pillars of Indian handloom heritage. Two entirely different philosophies of weaving.
The Distinction
Both are crafted from heavy silk. Both feature intricate zari. Both are bridal essentials. Yet a Paithani and a Banarasi represent two entirely different civilisations of weaving — one rooted in the Deccan plateau, the other shaped by centuries of Mughal patronage on the banks of the Ganga. Understanding the difference ensures you choose the right drape for your occasion.
Origin & Technique
The Yeola Paithani is woven using an interlocking tapestry technique — the weft threads of the border and body lock into each other during weaving, creating one inseparable fabric. The Varanasi Banarasi uses a brocade technique, where supplementary weft threads float across the base silk to create patterns — a method that allows for more elaborate all-over designs but leaves cut or floating threads on the reverse.
Motifs
Paithani motifs are drawn from Maharashtra's natural world: peacocks (Mor), parrots (Munia), lotuses (Kamal), and flowing vines (Asawali). They are bold, joyful, and culturally rooted. Banarasi motifs carry Mughal DNA: intricate floral jaals (lattice), paisleys (Keri), and architectural Persian brocades. They are layered, opulent, and regal in their detail.
The Zari
In a Paithani, zari acts as a dense canvas on the pallu and borders — creating blocks of shimmering gold against a vibrant silk body. In a Banarasi, zari is woven throughout the body itself as an all-over brocade, making the entire saree luminous. The Paithani is contrast; the Banarasi is immersion.
Choosing Your Drape
For a Maharashtrian wedding or any occasion rooted in Deccan heritage, the Paithani is the natural choice — culturally authoritative, vibrant, and deeply personal. For occasions demanding regal opulence, the Banarasi carries a weight and grandeur that is unmatched. AVĀNTI curates both. Our collection is shaped by intention — not by quantity. Whether you seek one or the other, we will help you find the right weave.
