Editorial No. 03 — Buying Guide
Nashik is the gateway to Yeola. Finding a genuine piece requires knowing where to look — and what to ask.
The Context
Nashik has long been the closest city to Yeola — the birthplace of the Paithani and home to its finest master weavers. Yet proximity does not guarantee authenticity. The city's saree markets carry a wide spectrum: genuine handloom pieces, semi-handloom hybrids, and power-loom replicas dressed in the language of heritage. Navigating this requires a framework.
Principle 01
True heritage does not need loud discounts or carnival-style marketing. Be wary of stores with prominent '40% off Paithani' signage — authentic handwoven sarees, which take weeks of a master weaver's labour to produce, are not compatible with aggressive discounting. The silence and simplicity of a space often tells you more about the integrity of what it sells than any marketing claim.
Principle 02
A reputable merchant will always know the origin of the saree. Ask specifically: Which village in Yeola was this woven in? Who is the weaver? What silk was used — pure mulberry or mixed? What type of zari — pure, tested, or metallic? A merchant who can answer these questions confidently is one who has a direct relationship with the source. One who cannot is one who does not.
Principle 03
Buying a Paithani is an acquisition, not a quick transaction. Look for spaces that offer proper lighting to inspect the colours accurately, comfortable seating that allows you to drape and consider, and curators who educate rather than push sales. The experience of choosing a Paithani should match the dignity of the object itself.
