Editorial No. 01 — Cultural Authority
A true Paithani is not just a silk saree — it is a meticulously engineered tapestry.
The Hook
With power-loom replicas flooding the market, understanding the anatomy of a genuine Yeola Paithani is essential before making an heirloom investment. The difference between authentic and imitation is not always visible to the untrained eye — but it is always felt. Here is what to look for.
Test 01
The ultimate proof of a handloom Paithani is its reverse side. Because it is woven using an interlocking tapestry technique — the same method used in European medieval tapestries — the back of the pallu looks exactly like the front. There are no loose threads, no floating meshes, no shortcuts. Turn it over. What you see on the back is the certificate.
Test 02
Authentic Paithani utilises pure or tested silver coated in gold. It has a distinct, dignified weight that sits perfectly on the shoulder — a gentle, settled heaviness that distributes evenly across the drape. Unlike the stiff, plasticky feel of synthetic metallic threads that scratch the skin, real zari softens with age and develops its own character.
Test 03
Run your fingers along the edge where the border meets the body of the saree. In a genuine handloom Paithani, the border and body are interlocked seamlessly during the weaving process itself — not attached afterwards. There is no raised stitch line, no seam, no join. The transition is architectural, not decorative.
Test 04
Traditional motifs are derived from the natural world — the Mor (peacock), Munia (parrot), and Kamal (lotus). An authentic artisan weaves these with geometric precision using a needle and shuttle: each peacock has a distinct, dignified posture. Power-loom copies produce a pixelated blurriness in the motif edges — an imprecision that reveals the machine behind it.
Visit AVĀNTI
Every Heirloom Paithani at AVĀNTI is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and the artisan's signature — provenance you can hold. But no certificate replaces the experience of touching a real weave. Book a private consultation at our Nashik gallery. We will place the saree in your hands and let the weave speak for itself.
